Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) made a striking statement on Friday, expressing his openness to voting for a Democrat in the 2024 presidential race, considering it an “upgrade” from former President Trump.
A known critic of Trump within the GOP, Romney’s remarks come as Trump continues to lead as the 2024 Republican front-runner. In an interview with CBS’ Norah O’Donnell, Romney indicated his support for most of the current Republican candidates, excluding Vivek Ramaswamy.
However, he didn’t shy away from considering Democratic candidates as preferable alternatives to both Trump and potentially Joe Biden. Emphasizing the potential risks of Trump’s re-election, which he views as “devastating for our country,” Romney also ruled out his own candidacy in 2024, humorously noting he’d only consider it in an unlikely scenario involving Godzilla.
This statement underscores the ongoing rifts within the Republican Party and Romney’s stance on the current political landscape.
